Intermediate Interior Designer

Job Description

As a prominent Interior Design firm in the hospitality industry, McMillan Design is looking to grow their team to support the growing needs and changing concepts of the design world. We are currently looking for an Intermediate Interior Designer with a minimum of 4-6 years of experience in the design field. We are looking for a leader and mentor in design with great communication and organizational skills; someone who is looking for a challenge in our fast-paced studio. If you are someone who has strong creative skills and ideas with an aptitude for concept development, materials and finishes and a desire to use those skills in a hospitality application, then McMillan Design is the place for you.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for conceptual design and design development of interior projects under the direction of, or in coordination with Lead Designers.
  • Assess Client’s needs and present viable, creative solutions.
  • Effectively and professionally communicate with clients, suppliers, vendors and contractors.
  • Review and coordinate consultant drawings, shop drawings and produce red line markups.
  • Ability to assemble construction drawings with minimal supervision including site plans, floor plans, elevations, building sections, wall details, etc. using AutoCAD
  • Site investigation/reviews, measuring and evaluating with a high level of accuracy.
  • Create and conceptualize design ideas utilizing a broad scope of design styles.
  • Produce and present design packages to clients in a clear, professional and effective manner.
  • Create and manage specification packages for multiple concepts and projects.

Qualifications:

  • Degree or Diploma in Interior Design.
  • Excellent working knowledge of AutoCAD, SketchUp and Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat, Illustrator etc.).
  • Fully versed in the Ontario Building Code having experience with large scale commercial, mixed use and restaurant buildings; BCIN an asset
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work well within a team; with both colleagues and clients.
  • Organizational skills – proven ability to manage and complete multiple projects, priorities and workflows on schedule and within budget.
  • Experience in the restaurant and hospitality industry is an asset but not a requirement.
  • Exceptional ability to multi-task and float between multiple projects at any given time, while maintaining a high level of accuracy and creativity.
  • High degree of leadership skills.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and peers. Able to work cooperatively with supervision and as part of a team.
  • Ability to prioritize workload.
Senior Interior Designer

Job Description

We are currently looking for a Senior Interior Designer with a minimum of 7+ years of experience in the design field. We are looking for a leader and mentor in design with great communication and organizational skills; someone who is looking for a challenge in our fast-paced studio. If you are someone who has strong creative skills and ideas with an aptitude for concept development, materials and finishes and a desire to use those skills in a hospitality application, then McMillan Design is the place for you.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ability to assess a client’s needs and then present solutions which meet those goals in a compelling and Artistic way.
  • Site investigation/reviews, measuring and evaluating with a high level of accuracy.
  • Review and coordinate consultant drawings, shop drawings and produce red line markups.
  • Ability to assemble construction drawings with minimal supervision including site plans, floor plans, elevations, building sections, wall details, etc. using AutoCAD
  • Manage a team of junior/intermediate designers ensuring design accuracy and schedules are being met and that Client’s expectations are being exceeded.
  • Responsible for maintaining positive client relationships throughout a project. Keep client apprised of project progress on regular basis. Initiate and maintain contact with other key project individuals for clarification, coordination and negotiation of critical issues.
  • Providing expertise across all areas of design including: floor plans, space planning and materials, including knowledge of current design trends and innovations.
  • Create and lead client meetings and presentations.
  • Implement all phases of a design project which includes contracts, budgeting, scheduling, planning, design, documentation and specifications, including the selection and specification of furniture.
  • Production of working drawings from schematic design through to construction administration with minimal supervision.

Qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Interior Design from a recognized Interior Design Program.
  • Minimum of 7-8 years of working experience in Design. 3 -5 years’ experience in hospitality design required.
  • Advanced knowledge of furniture, fixture and equipment (FF & E), architectural/interior finishes, lighting, signage, art and colour schemes to carryout design intent.
  • Knowledge of building regulations and safety codes. BCIN large buildings an asset.
  • Proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite as well as SketchUp is a definite asset.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional ability to multi-task and to float between multiple projects at any given time, while keeping a high level of accuracy.
  • Willingness and ability to learn new software quickly.

Extremely well organized with good interpersonal skills and proven reliability and ability to complete a project on schedule and within budget.
